What Is Pilates?
Pilates teaches you to control your muscles and movement through resistance exercises. Joseph Pilates developed the system in the early 20th century, built around 6 core principles: concentration, control, centring, precision, breathing, and flow. Originally, a Pilates workout involved following a 34-exercise sequence in a set order.
Since then, Pilates has evolved, but its origins set it apart from other exercise disciplines such as gym-based strength training and yoga.
There are two different types of Pilates workouts:
- Mat Pilates: Pilates mat exercises are the best place to start if you’re a beginner. You’ll use your own body weight for resistance or small props such as resistance bands, a Pilates ball, or light dumbbells. Mat Pilates is accessible and affordable: you just need a mat to work out at home using online videos.
- Reformer Pilates: This type of Pilates uses a sliding carriage called a reformer. It’s a bedlike frame with adjustable springs, straps, and a foot bar. Designed by Joseph Pilates himself, it can be used for a wide range of exercises that assist or challenge, depending on your needs. Reformer Pilates is suitable for beginners, but you’re strongly advised to have some 1:1 sessions with a trained instructor to learn how to use the equipment correctly. It can provide a more intense workout or, with the right knowledge, help you modify movements if you’re recovering from injury.
